It seems that several things are happening at the same time in the media industry.
1 The rise of alternative internet media funded by internet groups, private funds, non profit groups but are not owned or financed by any of the major mainstream media conglomerates. Many of these media groups are labelled as fake news by mainstream media and the establishment. Some examples are the Daily Mail, Science Daily, Breitbart News, Business Insider and Daily Caller and most recently, Twitter which is now X.
2. The decline in the number of owner groups of mainstream media. We now have 6 major media groups who control 90% of the media in America, http://www.businessinsider.com/these-6-corporations-control-90-of-the-media-in-america-2012-6. In the rest of the world it is even bleaker, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concentration_of_media_ownership.
3. A marked decline of paid consumption of media. It seems people are not willing to pay for what they can get for free. http://www.businessinsider.com/all-media-consumption-is-declining-with-one-exception-2016-6
